Professor Klein was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and is of Jewish descent. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1980 based on his work in creating computer models to forecast economic trends in the field of econometrics. He was the initiator of, and an active research leader in, the LINK project, which creates the world's first global economic model so that the effects of changes in the economy of one country are reflected in other countries. As noted by the Nobel committee, "few, if any, research workers in the empirical field of Economics, have had so many successors and such a large impact as Lawrence Klein".

Through his research and mentoring of many Chinese scholars, Professor Klein has made significant contributions to the development of China’s economic policies. Soon after his first visit in 1980, he became a consultant to the State Information Center. From 1979-80 onwards, extensive scholarly exchange has been maintained with China, watching, interpreting, and trying to help the economy flourish. Professor Klein was also instrumental in helping China to build its first economic model for policy planning in the 1980s. A recent example is that with the help of two visiting scholars from China’s State Information Center, Ms Liping Tao and Mr Huiqing Gao, in summer 2004, Professor Klein’s research demonstrated that China’s GDP growth rate had been even stronger than people realized, even though many economists had serious debates about the accuracy of China’s reported GDP growth rate.

Known as “ the father of econometric”, Professor Klein has been the president of the Econometric Society and the American Economic Association, serves as a consultant to U.S. and Canadian governments, a member of National Sciences Academy. He is also a member of the board of directors at W P Carey & Co.
